With more productive, creative, and smarter AI tools to enhance your Windows 11 PC, you can experience the best version of Windows, ever. This is still the Windows you know and love, and more.

Because support for Windows 10 is ending in October 2025, you’ll want to make sure you install Windows 11 or buy a device that uses Windows 11. Use this checklist to ensure you have what you need before the upgrade:

Minimum system requirements: Before upgrading to Windows 11, make sure your device meets the minimum system requirements. These include a compatible 64-bit processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. Certain features require specific hardware. Check here for a more detailed list of system requirements.

Upgrade by software download: One of the simplest ways to switch from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is by downloading the upgrade through Windows Update. Navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If your device is eligible, you’ll see the option to download and install Windows 11. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Buy a new device: If your current device doesn’t meet the minimum system requirements, consider purchasing a new device pre-installed with Windows 11. Not sure which device is right for you? Take this quiz to get personalized recommendations for your next PC.

Do I fix what I have or do I buy a new one?

This is a question we get asked all the time. The same answer applies whether we’re talking about a desktop, laptop, or even a printer.

The first thing we must determine is how much will the repair cost? Some laptops (looking at YOU, Ultrabook!) have very expensive screens. For example, an Ultrabook (think thin, light, and fast) have smaller screens for portability and they are touchscreens. Because of these features, the screens can be rather pricey compared to a regular LCD/LED non-touch screen.

The second thing we look at is how old the device is. Sometimes when things get up there in age, we secretly cross our fingers that something goes wrong just so we can get a new one! But oftentimes if its working well enough to accomplish the task, we can’t justify spending money on it.

As a general rule of thumb, we say if you are approaching the halfway price point to what a new one would be, you’re better off going that route–unless it’s a fairly new (as in less than a year) device. You wouldn’t want to spend $300 to fix a five year old laptop when you could replace it with something much newer and faster for $600. And, sometimes it’s like the old car analogy–you just spend $500 getting your car’s air conditioner fixed and then the transmission goes out a week later!

So in summary, computers aren’t like they were 20 years ago–they don’t cost $3000 and the cost of replacement oftentimes makes sense. Our staff will help educate you to help make an informed decision on your own.

We get calls almost daily from people whose PCs have been compromised. Most of these calls can be easily avoided if you know what to look for. Just last week, a family member brought their computer in because she answered a phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft. She allowed them access to her computer. They were NOT from Microsoft! Here are a few things that will help you avoid common traps:

Microsoft, Adobe, Apple, etc. will NEVER call you to say something is wrong with your computer. Have you ever tried calling these companies? You can barely contact them if you have an issue; they certainly don’t have an army of phone reps calling to let you know something is wrong.

Anything that resembles ‘driving to Walmart to buy Apple gift cards’ for payment is a scam. Legitimate companies want good ol’ cashola and NOT gift cards. Scammers want gift cards because they’re untraceable and can be sold for cash or bartered on the dark web.

Do not allow people you don’t know to remotely access your computer. Some scammers will simply claim there are things wrong with your computer by opening Event Viewer (which shows errors on a fresh Windows install) or they will do this AND download your files in the background hoping to find your coveted list of passwords or other information they can use or sell. They can also remotely install keyloggers which record everything you type into your computer including bank passwords, e-mail passwords, etc.

So in summary, be very cautious about who you let into your computer. If you get a cold call, 99.99% of the time it is not legitimate. Most companies you are able to engage with online have the option of two-factor authentication (2FA). It is strongly advisable to enable this feature for added security.

Be safe out there!

OK, let’s be honest, your computer doesn’t really hate you, but sometimes it feels that way. There are some basic things you can do on your own to help your PC run better overall and you don’t have to have to Computer Science degree to do them.

Run Disk Cleanup. This free tool comes with Windows and will clean basic .tmp (temporary) files and other odds and ends.

Reboot! One of the first things I ask when troubleshooting something is if the user restarted their PC. It tends to fix many little glitches that may occur. You don’t even have to power off all the way, just select ‘Restart’ from the power menu and let it reboot.

Do a virus scan. If you have ESET antivirus, it will perform a startup scan every time the computer starts Windows. Other antivirus software doesn’t always do it by default, so it’s a good idea to periodically (every couple of weeks) run a full system scan to make sure your PC is virus-free. Sometimes people bring in their PCs for service saying Windows is really slow, only to find they’ve had a virus for several weeks!

Lastly, consider upgrading to a SSD (Solid State Drive). When these drives first came out they were several hundred dollars for a very small drive. Now you can get a 1TB SSD for around $100. They have no moving parts so it’s like your computer is running off a big memory stick–because it basically is! I tell my customers, if I put in the drive and you don’t think it sped it up, I’ll take it out and put the old one back in for no charge. I’ve never had anyone take me up on that one
